Seating Arrangement

Who sits where, who faces whom, who is left of whom. Learn the direction rules once, draw a quick sketch, and every seating puzzle becomes a calm, step-by-step job.

Concept, step by step

1Know the family

Linear: people sit in a row, all facing one direction (or two rows facing each other). Circular: people sit around a table, facing the centre or facing outside.

Example: five friends on a bench is linear. Six friends round a dining table is circular.

2Fix left and right

A person's left and right depend on where that person faces, not on where you look from. Use the table below every time.

Example: in a row facing north, the person on your left stands towards the west.

3Count positions

For N people, position from the other end = N − p + 1. People between two seats = |p − q| − 1.

Example: the 20th seat from the left in a row of 30 is 30 − 20 + 1 = 11th from the right.

Equally spaced circle: the person opposite seat p is at p + N2, so N = 2 × (difference between two opposite seats).

Procedure to solve

  1. Read once. Note the shape (row or circle) and the facing direction.
  2. Sketch. Draw empty slots and mark North or the centre.
  3. Fixed clues first. Ends, middle, “opposite” and exact counts go in immediately.
  4. Group the relative clues. “A is next to B” becomes a block you can slide.
  5. Use the negatives. “T is not at the end” removes options quickly.
  6. Verify. Re-read every clue against the finished sketch, then answer.
